Having an automatic garage door opener that will open the door when you hit a button can make your life a lot easier because you aren't having to get in and out when the weather's bad or when you're really tired, or when you really just don't want to get out of the car. So, when your door stops working, you want to make sure that you can get it working again as soon as possible. There are a few things that you can check before you have someone come out to figure out what is going on with your garage door opener.

Check the Battery

The first thing that you want to do is to check the battery in your remotes or any keypads that you use in order to see if they are still good. Batteries in remotes that live in your car can get drained because of the temperatures that they are subjected to. For example, cold can drain your batteries quickly, so you may need to check them more often in the winter, depending on how cold it gets where you live. So, change the batteries to see if that gets your door open. You may need to get specialty batteries, depending on what kind they are.

Check the Unit Power Source

Once you know that the batteries in the remotes and keypads are good, you want to make sure that the opener itself has power. So, check to see if the unit is plugged in if it isn't hardwired into your house's power system. You should also check on your circuit breaker to make sure that the circuit for the opener is open and working. If your garage door motor isn't hardwired and uses an outlet, checking the circuit breaker will also work, because you need to make sure that the outlet is getting power. If the circuit is broken, just flip the switch to see if that gets everything working again. If the circuit breaker turns immediately off again, then you need to leave it alone and wait until you get a professional to come to the house because there is a problem with the electrical system, and it could cause serious problems.

If you are having a problem with your automatic garage door opener, you have a few things that you can do to troubleshoot it. Then you need to call a garage door repair company and have them come out and check out your system for you.
